Why, Lord?
I want to be perfectly honest with you today. It is okay to ask our Heavenly Father, “Why, Lord?” It is okay to come before Him in prayer and ask why. However, what truly matters is 'how we ask.' It must come from a heart seeking understanding, not from a heart making accusations against God.
Even our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ cried out while hanging upon the cross:
Matthew 27:46 (KJV)
“And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is to say, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?”
The Bible teaches us that God is our Heavenly Father and that we can cry out to Him, “Abba, Father.”
Romans 8:15 (KJV)
“For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.”
The Scriptures also teach us that God deals with us as His children. Through Jesus Christ, through His sacrifice and the shedding of His precious blood, we have been given the privilege of becoming children of God, heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ.
Romans 8:17 (KJV)
“And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.”
As a father myself, I cannot begin to tell you how many times my children have asked me, “Why?”
But consider this for a moment.
It is through asking why that we learn. It is through seeking understanding that trust is built. It is through the trials and questions of life that our faith can grow stronger. And it is through those moments of seeking our Heavenly Father that we can draw closer to God through Jesus Christ.
There will be times when we do not understand what God is doing. There will be times when we cannot see His purpose or understand His timing. But even in those moments, we can come before Him as His children and ask, “Father, why?”
It is okay to ask God why. But ask with a humble heart, not with a heart filled with frustration, anger, or accusation.
And remember, just because our Heavenly Father does not reveal the answer does not mean He has not heard our prayer.
Sometimes faith is not found in understanding why, but in trusting God even when we do not understand.
So this day, if your heart is asking, “Why, Lord?” bring that question before your Heavenly Father. But above all, let your heart also say, “Lord, I may not understand, but I trust You.”
Oftentimes, people quote John 3:16, but I believe one of the most beautiful scriptures in the Bible is found in 2 Corinthians 5:21, where it declares:
“For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.” (KJV)
It is through this very act of love and sacrifice that salvation could be offered to mankind and our relationship with our Heavenly Father could be restored.
The plan of salvation is truly simple, and what is required of us is so straightforward that even a child can understand it.
Revelation 3:20
